How to Tie Your Tie

There are many methods to tie a tie, but the four main ways of doing it shall be discussed below. No matter which method is being used, the criteria to have a good knot are based on the size of the knot against the dress shirts collar size or how snugly fit the knot is between the collar points.

Pratt (Shelby) Knot

This knot is close to the Half-Windsor knot.
The tying method is simpler and has an easier way to create the dimple. The tie will also be more symmetrical.

Four-in-hand

In order to have success in the "tie a tie" this way, the hand of the fabric (explained in the tie's details) is very important. Heavier hand ties will take into V-shape knot and the dimple very easily and with style.

Windsor Knot

The Windsor Knot is thick, wide and triangular knot that projects confidence. It is best suited for spread collar shirts and it's actually quite easy to do.

To tie this knot select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then just follow the steps below:

1. The wide end - "W" should extend aproximatelly 12 inches below narrow end - "N". Cross end "W" over end "N".
2. Bring end "W" up through loop between collar and tie, then back down.
3. Pull end "W" underneath the "N" and to the left, back through the loop and to the left again so that the "W" is inside out.
4. Bring the end "W" across the front from left to right.
5. Pull the end "W" up through the loop again.
6. Bring wide end "W" down through the knot in front.
7. Using both your hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw up to collar.

Half Windsor Knot

1. Start with wide end (red color)of the tie on your right and extending a foot below narrow end.
2. Cross wide end over narrow and turn back underneath.
3. Bring up and turn down through the loop.
4. Pass the wide end around front from left to right.
5. Then up through loop...
6. And down through know in front. Tighten carefully and draw up to collar.
